3 Tips to Overcome Negative Thinking

October 31st, 2011

Michael David LawrienceAre you sick and tired of the same patterns reappearing in your life, over and over? Do you focus on what you want and still get the opposite? On the other hand, does worry also create what you don’t want?

Are you aware of your negative thoughts which sabotage your happiness, self-esteem, and success? When negative thoughts sabotage our conscious intents, we feel bad about ourselves which increases our negative thinking.

Do the following three tips to overcome negative thinking thereby improving your self-esteem and success in all areas of your life.

Tip # 1 – Self Esteem Mirror Exercise:

One way to begin becoming more aware of these negative thoughts involves looking into a physical mirror, preferably 3 times a day, morning, evening, and before bedtime. Look deeply into your eyes and say, I Love You. See more about this in my article Why Do We as Children Growing up in the Western World Have Such Low Self-Esteem?

Do you love yourself 100%? Most of us will say “No.” The mirror exercise allows the positive statement I Love You to draw the negative thoughts in our unconscious to the surface of our awareness. These thoughts sabotage our efforts to love ourselves more, have more money, have better relationships, and more satisfying work.

Are you willing to practice the self esteem mirror exercise for 21 days in a row to begin to overcome your negative thoughts?

Why Do Children in the Western World Have Such Low Self-Esteem?

October 24th, 2011

7 in 10 girls believe they are not good enough or do not measure up in some way including their looks, performance in school and relationship with friends and family members. US Statistics

Family Patterns of Low Self-Esteem

self-esteem Children’s self-esteem suffers in the Western World, because many fathers and mothers lack the skills or take the time to tell their children they love them. In contrast in the Tibetan society, according to the Dalai Lama, with extended families children feel loved. Thus, Tibetan children have no issue with low self-esteem.

When we as adults have little capacity to love ourselves then we feel reluctant to express love to others, including our children.

The lack of loving self and being able to express love to others goes back generations in both my father and mother’s lineage. My father drank all the time probably because he felt awful about himself. I have no idea how he felt for he never spoke about anything personal or showed any interest in talking to me. I suspect my father suffered from very low self-esteem.

My mother’s mother died before her teen years. She took over being the mother for the family and received no praise from her autocratic father. All she knew was hard work. Again I suspect my mother also suffered from low self-esteem.

Spiritual Awakening

awakeningFor the first time in human history, we can all choose to transform our separateness into a higher spiritual awakening. Awakening, however, can come and go until it is a more permanent state of enlightenment. This feeling of separateness lies at the root of our suffering.

An awakened human experiences no need for control. They become a witness to their thoughts. They become an observer of their body. They live in the reality of the present moment, whether pleasurable or painful.

Let’s define some terms. The meaning of enlightenment refers to a dissolving of one’s self as a separate being and a growing awareness or consciousness of our true inner self. Spiritual Awakening can mean the same as enlightenment, awakening, however, can come and go until you experience a more permanent state of enlightenment. Finally, ascension like spiritual awakening and enlightenment indicates movement to a higher level of consciousness.
